Things To Avoid Doing With Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson's disease is a Neurodegenerative Disorder prevalent in aging individuals and attributed to genetic vulnerability and factors in an individual's environment. (Seidl SE, Santiago JA, Bilyk H, Potashkin JA, 2014)
With that knowledge, it is only wise to know of things that may be controlled. For instance, maintaining a balanced diet helps in managing the disease.
So, what are the things one can avoid?
1. Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks
A large intake of sugar, even in a healthy person's diet, is not healthy. If you do want to have sugar, opt for naturally sweet foods. However, it's best to avoid having too much sweet in your diet.
2. Avoid Proteins
If you're on Medication, proteins can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. It is better to avoid such foods (for eg. Fish, Meat). Instead, try to incorporate vegetables and carbohydrates in your diet.
3. Avoid Citrus
Citrus is not your friend if you're suffering from Parkinson's. Instead, opt for anti-oxidant rich juices such as Watermelon, Papaya, and Berries. Make sure they are fresh.
4. Avoid Eating When Nauseous
It isn't wise to force-feed yourself when you're feeling nauseous. Wait for the feeling to pass, and then, you may eat.
5. Avoid Caffeinated Beverages and Alcohol
Caffeine is known for creating sleep problems. It is wise to avoid these beverages to have an undisrupted sleep cycle.
6. Avoid Self Neglect
It is common to feel worn down by the disease you're suffering from, but even so, it's important to take care of your mental wellness as well. Read a book, take out a few minutes for yourself, or maintain a journal that can help you cope with everyday stress.
While you know now the things to avoid, it is also essential that you tell your loved ones if and when, you're struggling.
